VP of Technology

The VP of Technology reports to the President and works in collaboration with colleagues as a member of the Executive Leadership team. The VP of Technology is responsible for enhancing the skills, capabilities, and innovation of our web development, QA, integration/migration and technical solutions teams while also owning SmartBug’s internal and client-facing technology stack. 

The VP of Technology is responsible for the overall planning, organizing, and execution of all things technical/development at SmartBug. This includes directing staff to meet customer and internal business requirements as well as the maintenance of existing applications and development of new technical solutions. 

The VP of Technology is also responsible for the technical onboarding of both new and existing MarTech partners to support the Client Services team in our clients’ MarTech implementation, integration, and overall adoption.

Essential Functions

  • Ensure development and QA have the skills, training, processes, and leadership in place to deliver award-winning work that is on time and within budget. 
  • Refine existing processes to support an agile development environment that meets the needs of SmartBug’s target market.
  • Ensure SmartBug’s integration and migration offers (and supporting team) enables SmartBug to aggressively pursue API-integration projects to support client and internal projects that are profitable, high-growth lines of our business. 
  • Execute technical due diligence and onboarding of internal and client-facing MarTech partners and ensure we have the expertise to execute such partnerships. 
  • Develop both new and existing career paths for technical team members, including the implementation of training and development programs to attract and retain top technical talent.
  • Contribute to SmartBug’s internal mentorship program by mentoring 1-3 SmartBug mentees from other departments.
  • Collaborate with legal to ensure compliance with infosec and data protection policies within the company and client-facing.
  • Nurture a culture of innovation and experimentation, particularly as it relates to new platform offerings from key partners such as HubSpot and Salesforce.
  • Grow technology service product and consulting offerings based on internal and external client needs.
  • Drive the company’s development technology and skills roadmap
  • Lead technology due diligence and IT integration of future acquired companies. 
  • Continue to strengthen SmartBug’s enterprise-wide information security systems to ensure the protection of the Company’s data assets. 
  • Continue to identify, evaluate and recommend new, best-of-breed technologies to ensure the scalability, reliability and efficiency of SmartBug’s IT support, business management software applications, and hardware infrastructure.
  • Ensure projects meet company financial goals.
  • Assess and improve the skills and aptitudes of your team as required to meet business goals.
  • Work with client services and the broader revenue team to ensure client services has access to training and onboarding resources of new technology. 
  • Collaborate with sales to ensure new development projects are scoped appropriately to meet development goals, while also meeting sales and marketing product/offer requirements. 
  • Create a culture of innovation where SmartBug is seen as a company pushing the envelope across your department. 
  • Ensure all members of your team are sharing their knowledge as part of SmartBug’s marketing activities.
  • Be a spokesperson and thought-leader within HubSpot and other platform ecosystems. 
  • Publish and maintain processes for all development, test and integration work. 
  • Review code and/or business requirements as applicable.
  • Participate in hardware and/or software evaluations as required.
  • Collaborates with overflow and referral partners to ensure client needs are met.
  • Performs salary administration and conducts interviews and makes recommendations for new hires, consultants and/or replacement personnel.


  • 10+ years of technical management experience in a startup or investor-backed company
  • Strong knowledge of HubSpot and its ecosystem
  • Leadership mentality - ready and excited to lead and develop your own business unit
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced environment where resourcing is critical
  • Strong expertise interacting with REST APIs (SOAP a plus)
  • Track record of success managing and coaching technology teams of 10+ professionals
  • Sound understanding of the online landscape (brand marketing, performance marketing, content, SEO, organic activity, etc.), how the buyer’s journey unfolds, and how front-end and back-end systems and solutions can acquire and accelerate prospects through to conversion
  • Top tier client relationship management skills, ability to uplevel the client experience 
  • Experience working remotely in similar roles preferred
